A summary of the events of Friday November 10th to the present:

On Friday November 10th at 5:20 AM my sister, Chelsie, woke in the living room of our six room rental house to a large fire on our front porch. She woke up the rest of us in the house (five roommates and myself) and we all got out with the clothes on our backs in less than two minutes. All of the residents of the house escaped without injury.

There were four other fires in the U-District in Seattle, Washington that morning - two other small house fires and two dumpster fires. Our house sustained the most damage by far. All are the work of a suspected arson. He (or she) lit the couch on our porch on fire and the rest is history.

The top floor of the house sustained the most damage and is basically a complete loss. My brother Jeremy and I lived on top floor and lost 99% of our belongings in the fire. The rooms downstairs were water damaged and smoke damaged.

Friday afternoon we moved what could be salvaged to our garage until it could be moved to new locations. We also left some items in the basement of the house until they could be moved. Sometime between Friday and Saturday our doors were kicked in and the remaining items in the shed and house were ransacked and looted. One roommate lost all of his clothes and his iPod and another lost his Xbox and $600 bike.

We estimate the total property losses at around $25,000.

Right now we're looking for a new place to live and trying to recover what we can from the fire.

Thanks to everybody for your help!

Right now we don't have any need for clothes or other items for a house yet. We're working on a place to put it first. Frankly we just need giftcards or money to help us purchase everything we lost in the fire.

We will try and keep you updated with our housing search and our struggle to rebuild our UDistrict Dynasty.

Again, thanks to all for your concern.

Sincerely,

Former residents of 5206 and 11th Ave NE

did you check to see if your collective parents' home insurance policies covered your property?

My brother and I are not covered under our parents' policy, and neither are two other roommates. Two roommates are covered but they didn't lose as much.

We considered renters' insurance in passing but thought the worst we'd get hit by was a burglary, and we didn't own very many expensive things. Add it all together though, and everything is very expensive. We didn't consider that.

Thanks for the question!
